Maya Osborne-Coleman from Maffra, Victoria, is making strides in her Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, with plans to graduate in 2025.

In 2022, Maya received the Shirley Harlock scholarship from Gardiner Foundation – now she is leveraging her academic journey to deepen her involvement in the dairy industry.

“This past semester has gone really smoothly, and I am consistently passing all my classes,” Maya shared, highlighting the benefits of living on campus. “Being close to all my classes and the study library has been crucial. I’ve been attending all lectures, tutorials and practical classes, and I regularly brainstorm assignments with peers at the library.”

Maya has been actively networking within the industry, attending events like the Dairy Australia networking night and the Approaching Ag Careers Fair. “These opportunities have opened my eyes to the many different pathways in agriculture and the dairy industry. I still aspire to have a role somewhere within the dairy industry,” she said.

Currently, Maya is completing a workplace learning placement at a local dairy farm in Wagga Wagga, which she secured through a connection made at the Dairy Symposium in Sydney.

“This experience is reinforcing my passion for the livestock industry, while also providing insight into agronomy and pastures,” she said.

The scholarship has allowed Maya to focus on her studies without the stress of balancing work. “I’m using my scholarship funds to cover my accommodation on campus, which means I don’t have to worry about working each week. This allows me to say yes to extra-curricular opportunities and focus on my studies,” Maya explained.

As she continues her studies, Maya remains committed to a future in the dairy industry, aiming to build a career where she can keep learning, networking, and promoting the importance of agriculture.
