Norman King enjoys the fact he gets to do a bit of everything working in dairy operations at the Ellinbank Research Farm in Gippsland.
Apart from daily milking of the 400+ seasonal calving herd, his tasks ranged from feeding and AI to farm maintenance and fertiliser. There’s never a dull moment. And he loves it that way.
Almost two years ago, Norman saw an ad for a three month dairy project at Ellinbank. He applied and got it. As his project was coming to an end one of the permanent farm staff left. Norman put his hand up and was offered the job.
And he hasn’t looked back. While working he’s done several practical dairy courses like Nutrition Fundamentals and Cups On, Cups Off. He was selected to go on the annual Young Dairy Network study trip to Tasmania (postponed due to Coronavirus).
He recently finished a Certificate 3 in Business and is considering a business administration course, with a view to moving into farm management eventually.
